My CV, out loud
The interviewer asks 'so, tell me about yourself' and you freeze like it's a trick question — it's not, it's just Turkish you haven't met yet.

Watch out — My CV, out loud
Your CV opener: 'Beş yıl bir bankada çalıştım.' One tiny ending decides if you still work there.
Beş yıl bir bankada çalıştımCV verb rule: a past, finished job takes '-dı/-di/-tı/-ti' (çalıştım = I worked, it's over). A job you still do takes '-iyor' (çalışıyorum = I work there now), and its length takes '-dır': 'beş yıldır çalışıyorum' = I've been working for five years. Same topic, different ending, opposite meaning.
The scene — My CV, out loud
Zeeza is running a mock interview timer on his phone. Nujoom has volunteered to be the interviewer and has taken this way too seriously. Sama is the clock.
- Bir dakikan var. Süre başladı. Kendini tanıt.You have one minute. Time's started. Introduce yourself.
- Tik tak.Tick tock.
- Tamam, tamam. 2020'de mezun oldum.Okay, okay. I graduated in 2020.
- Beş yıl bir bankada çalıştım.I worked at a bank for five years.
- Beş yıl! Sabrına hayranım.Five years! I admire your patience.
- Bir dakikada bir kariyer. Etkileyici.A whole career in one minute. Impressive.
The idea — My CV, out loud
For a finished job, the verb takes -di: 'beş yıl bir bankada çalıştım' (I worked at a bank for five years). What is still true now takes no -di: 'pazarlama alanında deneyimim var' (I have experience in marketing), and a job you still do takes -iyor: 'çalışıyorum'.
Now you can say your own CV out loud in under a minute: past jobs closed with -di, what's still true now without it, no mixing them up.
